“Poultry is unique in many aspects even to other agricultural contracts. RAFI is the only organization I have ever witnessed that knows how onerous conditions are for us, the small farmer. And each issue they have attacked on our behalf. Whether it be in the press, local and state governments or Washington, DC, it is comforting to know that you have the support of such an organization.” –Craig Watts, contract poultry farmer
What gives you the courage to speak up, to put yourself on the line?Kay Doby spoke up years ago while working as a poultry contractor for Pilgrim’s Pride. She refused to pay exorbitant prices for mandatory, unnecessary upgrades. She knew they would guarantee her nothing but debt. So she stood up for herself. In 2007, Kay delivered a testimony to Congress, highlighting the many “economically abusive” practices of contract companies. “Unfortunately, farmers are rapidly losing their independence,” she said in her statement. For that, the poultry company shut her down. But Kay’s voice set her free. Her courage to speak up was augmented by more than 40 other grower voices and even more public support, including ours. Their unified voice became greater than their risk. Will you speak up with us? With a donation to RAFI, you are raising your voice for justice in our food system. Through a 2010 grant from RAFI’s Agricultural Reinvestment Fund, Kay, a fourth-generation tobacco farmer, eased into a sustainable livelihood. Her chicken houses have been converted to facilitate raising goats, chickens and turkey on pasture. Kay runs the show, and answers to no one but herself.
“RAFI helped me finance it all. It is amazing,” Kay says. “They help farmers transition into something else, something new, something sustainable. If it wasn’t for RAFI, I wouldn’t have been able to finally do what I wanted to do on my own.”Our food system needs work. We know that. Kay’s testimony highlighted how policy and market forces are stacked against us. But her valiant testimony also reminded us of the strength we have in each other. And though her business got shut down, we helped her get right back up. That’s why we’ve got to speak up. We succeed together, with our unshakable faith in knowing what is right. Please consider a donation today. Even better – make a gift of $10 a month and your donation will help farmers all year long. Your voice makes all the difference. It makes us stronger, louder, more courageous. Together we will continue to be heard, loud and clear. Thank you for your support.
