Kay Doby’s Testimony Before the House Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry (PDF) – Doby, a farmer and president of the N.C. Poultry Grower’s Association, shares her experiences as a contract farmer.
“I don’t think about the money,” says Craig Watts, poultry farmer. “I think about these people losing everything they’ve got. There is risk in everything, but they did not fail on their own. They failed because of other people making decisions for them.”
Kay Doby stood up to big poultry by delivering a 2007 testimony to Congress. She was immediately fired. Now, she raises free-range chickens and goats, and continues to use her voice to empower others to speak up.
Current policies offer little to protect growers against abusive contracts. Tell your senators to support amendments that protect livestock and poultry producers from unfair and deceptive contracting practices.
