Third Thursday Films kicks off its 2017-2018 season with “Under Contract: Farmers and the Fine Print,” at 7pm on Thursday, September 21 at the GMP Hall, 350 Hudson Avenue, Newark. The film is co-sponsored by The Canal Market District and the Rural Advancement Fund International-USA (RAFI-USA). Following the film, there will be a discussion with a panel of farmers from the Canal Market in Newark: Carie and Jarrod Starr from Cherokee Valley Bison Ranch http://wild-wooly-horny.blogspot.com/ and Jesse Rickard from Fox Hollow Farm http://www.foxhollowfarmnaturally.com/index.html.
For the first time in a full-length documentary, farmers tell their stories and experts reveal how the corporate agricultural production model pits farmer against farmer. Join us as we travel across the American South and to Southern India to understand what’s happening to farmers living under contract and what we can do to change our food system for the better.
The Come to the Table Conference is a biennial gathering of food, faith, and farm advocates focused on relieving hunger and strengthening local, sustainable agriculture in North Carolina. This year’s conference theme is “Bridging Divides: Cultivating Food & Faith Connections.” Participants will have the opportunity to attend workshops covering theology and food, community development, racial equity, and food and farm policy. This year, we welcome former NFL player turned NC farmer and hunger relief activist Jason Brown as our keynote speaker. Come to the Table was founded in 2007 and is a project of the Rural Advancement Foundation International.
