Over decades, RAFI staff have worked closely with Land Loss Prevention Project. In hundreds of cases, their free legal assistance has made the difference between the loss of a farm and a family staying in their home, on their land. For a farm family facing hard times because of circumstances out of their control– like a natural disaster or a cut-off chicken contract–the Land Loss Prevention Project provides expert legal assistance that would otherwise be out of their reach.
People do not like to publicly speak about nearly losing their farms, and so those who help the most in these situations often go unheralded. But we have seen, time and time again, the importance of Land Loss Prevention Project’s assistance to farm families in desperate situations.
The current budgets before both the NC House and the NC Senate eliminate funding for this critical service. At a time when North Carolina leads the nation in loss of farm land, and where the transition between farm generations is raising concerns for much of the farm community, we cannot afford to lose this important service.
The fate of the Land Loss Prevention Project is now in the hands of Speaker Tillis, President Pro Tempore Berger, and the members of the budget conference committee. We respectfully suggest that rural North Carolina cannot afford to lose the important services of the Land Loss Prevention Project, and that they be included in this year’s budget.
