To help understand and address these changes resulting from the increased use of biotechnology in agriculture, USDA established the Advisory Committee on Biotechnology and 21st Century Agriculture (AC21). One critical area where the committee has focused its attention is how farmers who produce different crops intended for different customers-biotechnology-derived, conventional, or organic-can best co-exist and produce the crops that meet their customers’ needs. In 2012, the AC21 committee presented this report to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to be used as guidance to enhance working relationships among farmers growing different types of crops, specifically biotech and non-biotech crops. The report sets forth the final set of recommendations on enhancing coexistence among different crop production methods and makes recommendations to the USDA emphasizing education and stewardship. In February of 2013, the USDA issued a two page fact sheet addressing detailing how the department planned to address the recommendations set forth in the Enhancing Coexistence Report. The fact sheet is available as PDF on the USDA website here.
